Responsive Jewellery

This prototype responds to the the way in which the ring is worn, and in so doing visually responds to certain movements. The project considers ways in which the life of physical handmade objects may be recorded digitally and physically.

A light sensor is fitted in the base of the band. The degree to which the hand is closed affects the amount of light reaching the sensor. This in turn affects the amount of LED light emitted from the face of the ring. An Arduino Lilypad is the microcontroller which forms the base onto which the LEDs are mounted. A light sensor is fitted in the base of the band. The degree to which the hand is closed affects the amount of light reaching the sensor. This in turn affects the amount of LED light emitted from the face of the ring. An Arduino Lilypad is the microcontroller running the software and this forms the base onto which the LEDs are mounted.

The changes in light emitted by the LEDs on the ring trigger other sensors embedded in other objects causing a ‘conversation’ between objects.
This project is in its early stages but ongoing tests will investigate applications of responsive jewellery.
